JUDSON BROWN FINE ARTS

What ignites my passion to paint are the same sensibilities; a love of nature and the outdoors that I had
back in high school. A lifelong resident of Western NY, I have spent many years drawing and painting on
the rivers, lakes, mountains and countryside. The commitment to an artistic vision truly developed with
my sabbatical leave from teaching high school art in 1988. Painting with Don Getz, of Ohio and Tom
Nicholas-NA, of Rockport, Massachusetts during that time period was a turning point in my artwork and
career. My first published Adirondack artwork appeared in the American Artist Watercolor magazine in
1990.

Spending increased painting time in the Adirondacks, hiking mountains and canoeing the rivers and
lakes is a constant inspirational source.  Each of my paintings are similar to chapters in a book. In that
when finished, they take me to another place or line of thought. I enjoy the journey of discovery in that
sense as much as I do the painting process itself. There are frequent surprises, twists and turns and
always the conflicts that arise. Those are the destinations and storyline for the viewer of my paintings. My
next painting begins and the point of departure continues.

When I’m not traveling, my local scenery never fails to provide me with all the pleasures of painting I look
for. I get out of painting what I put into it, everything I can, all the time. I have thought of myself as the artist
first, then the art teacher. Teaching high school art in West Valley, NY for 34 years was a wonderful
journey. Continuing to teach today at various levels enables me to pass on what I consider valuable for
artists working to improve on their skills. I continue to maintain active involvement in showing locally and
regionally.

Gallery representation continues with new paintings being exhibited at
Gallery 3040 in Old Forge, NY.
