What ignites my passion to paint are the same sensibilities; a love of nature and the outdoors that I had back in
high school. A lifelong resident of Western NY, I have spent many years drawing and painting on it's rivers, lakes,
mountains and countrysides. The commitment to an artistic vision truly developed with the sabbatical leave from
teaching high school art in 1988. Painting with Ohio artist Don Getz, and Rockport, Massachusetts artist Tom
NIcholas-NA, during that time period was a turning point in my artwork and career. Published Adirondack artwork
appeared in the American Artist Watercolor magazine in 1990. Both artists, Getz and Nicholas, strongly urged the
foundations of disciplined drawing for successful painting. Academic drawing skills and methods that are once
again, being reinforced constantly in ateliers and academies. That type of instruction is also a part of the intensive
summer workshops I've taken at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia, under Nelson Shanks and teaching staff.
Spending summer months, and winter days in the Adirondacks, hiking mountains and canoeing the rivers and
lakes is a constant inspirational source. An artistic as well as personal connection has evolved and matured within
New Yorks "Blue Line". The time put into trekking the park is rewarded with the spirit found in these special places.
Those are the destinations for the viewer of my paintings, and what influences my next point of departure. The
saying "Go big or go home" can be very appropriate and loved. When not travelling to bigger places, my local
scenery never fails to provide me with intimate pleasures of painting. I get out of painting what I put into it,
everything I can, all the time.
I have thought of myself as the artist first, then the art teacher. Teaching high school art in West Valley, NY for 34
years was wonderful. I took pride in being able to demonstrate varied techniques and methods for students.
Continuing to teach today at various levels enables me to pass on what I consider valuable for artists working to
improve on their skills. I continue to maintain active involvement in showing locally and regionally. Gallery
representation continues with new paintings being exhibited at Gallery North in Old Forge, NY. Contact Deborah
